Why convert MP4 to MP3

About the quality and file size
We pull out the audio and throw away the picture. Most videos have compressed audio inside. When you convert to MP3, a tiny bit more gets squeezed away, but at 192 kbps you won't hear it on headphones or speakers. If you're going to edit or sample it later, convert to WAV instead so nothing more gets lost.

Get the video off your phone
Tap the pad and the phone opens its picker. Where the video hides depends on the phone.
iPhone
- Photo Library. Videos you shot, saved from TikTok or Instagram, or downloaded with a browser extension are here.
- WhatsApp, Telegram, iMessage. Open the video in the chat, tap Share, then Save Video. It lands in Photo Library.
- Choose File. Opens the Files app: iCloud Drive, Downloads from Safari, and Google Drive or Dropbox if their apps are installed. Missing a cloud? In Files tap Browse, the three dots, Edit, and switch it on.
Android
- Videos or Gallery. Camera clips, screen recordings and saved TikToks. If the picker opens on Recent, tap the menu and pick Videos.
- Downloads. Anything you downloaded in Chrome.
- WhatsApp. Videos show up under Videos too. If not, Internal storage, Android, media, com.whatsapp, WhatsApp, Media, WhatsApp Video.
- Google Drive. Sits in the same picker menu when the Drive app is installed.
What you get
- An MP3 at the bitrate you picked, 44.1 kHz. About 1.4 MB per minute at 192 kbps.
- Files up to 10 minutes, from your device only. A YouTube or TikTok link does not work, download the file first.
- Title, artist and cover art are not copied over.
- The file keeps its name plus what changed, like beat-128kbps-mono.mp3.

Is the MP3 the same quality as the audio in the video?
Close. The audio gets re-compressed as MP3. At 192 kbps you lose a little brightness, at 320 kbps almost none. For listening it's fine. If you're editing, use WAV.
The video has several audio tracks. Which one do I get?
The first one. A video with a commentary track or a second language gives you the main track.
Can I convert a YouTube or TikTok video?
No. The converter works with files on your device only. Download the video first if you have the right to use it, then drop the file here.
