current Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, is cutting roughly 20% of the U.S. military’s general and admiral positions — one-fifth of its highest-ranking command structure. That is not a minor administrative change. These positions represent decades of command experience, institutional knowledge, and strategic leadership. Removing that much senior leadership in a short period can create serious gaps in continuity, expertise, and military readiness. You can argue that some positions are unnecessary. But cutting one-fifth of the senior command structure should raise serious questions about what is being lost in the process.
