They put a lock on every mouth that gets too loud Then call it “protection” while they censor the crowd They cut out the words they don't want you to say Then act like the truth magically disappeared that way They don't want violence, don't want swearing, don't want heat Don't want anything disturbing coming through the beat Cut the verse, cut the scene, cut the joke, cut the line By the time they're fucking finished, there ain't nothing left that's mine Scream: You call it protecting people. I call it deciding what people are allowed to hear. You don't trust the audience. You trust the scissors. You take a dangerous thought and bury it beneath a warning Then wonder why the same damn thought comes back every morning You put a black bar over words, blur faces on the screen Then somehow everybody knows exactly what you tried to clean Censor: “Mr. Scream, your lyrics contain profanity, violence, offensive themes, and absolutely no fucking self-control. Please remove them immediately.” Scream: Thank you. You just proved my entire fucking point. You say you're protecting children, protecting society But sometimes censorship's just fear wearing authority If the message is disgusting, let people call it disgusting If the art is offensive, let the audience discuss it Don't rewrite my words because you don't like the sound Don't cut my fucking voice and call the silence profound You can put a warning on it, you can tell them what they’ll hear But don't pretend deleting words will make the ideas disappear Censor: “Unfortunately, that statement has been deemed inappropriate.” Scream: “Unfortunately, your brain has been deemed optional.” They can censor the record, censor the screen, Censor every fucking word that makes them uncomfortable or mean But they can't censor thought, can't censor memory Can't erase what's already living inside everybody So cut the verse. Mute the track. Put the warning on the screen. You can censor Scream... but you can't censor what he means.
