Built by American Car & Foundry in 1955–57, the R16s were the cast-iron bruisers of post-war New York—same mid-century swagger as a ’57 Chevy, but militant, municipal, and unforgiving. These cars didn’t glide; they marched. Heavy steel bones, war-era attitude, and a work ethic that ran the city while the city slept. Meet the trio: John, JoJo, and Josephine—warriorets on rails. Hardcore bars, no amnesty. They held the BMT and IND divisions down through the handoff years after the New York City Subway phased out the R1–R9 in the late ’70s. This was the grind era: platforms loud, yards colder, and paint schemes telling street history—olive green, Redbird red, wine-burgundy, then silver with blue stripes.
