Knock on the door of your heart I’m on standby/ juggling issues of life for my hands tied/ wit my niggas chilling and one of em got his hair dyed/ change in the jar for the cab fair ride/ when I close my eyes I wanna dream dream/ then wake to a cup of coffee plain bagel and cream cheese/ brushing my teeth after singing in the shower/ 7:50 on the clock next 10 to the hour/ Song break I say the spirit of the black family is undying/ and you can smell of essence of us through fish frying/ the unwillingness to not give up and keep trying/ in the face hardship and evil people lying/ the smell of lemon spray starch steaming off the iron/ I seem my mom smiling/ dealing with a lot of stress and adversity/ scraping and saving to send that child to university/ in a country that’s free we seem to never taste the freedom/ when everyone’s mindset around us is how can cheat them/ turn around beat them and mistreat them/ then walk by and not respond like we done see them/ and yet the golden rule is what is enstill in us /and how strong to you have to be to teach that to our children/ to some it’s bizarre and even bewildering/ getting the cold shoulder that’s feels like a wilderness/ we didn’t ask to come over was forced from our villages/ then sent over on ships like a pilgrimage/
