The day hung like a damp rag humid heavy and blue My mind sagged like a broken soul what was I to do? The shadow grabbed me by the hand I resisted and pulled away when I'm ready I will go perhaps another day. The dog he looked me up and down his canine teeth did bear I lashed out with a leather boot he cowered and gave a glare I wandered to the corner no plans I had in mind Just wandered in the golden sun to see what I might find The pavement lay beneath my feet it sucked and drew my soul some workmen joked and laughed as they began to fill a hole My mind was full of nothing I really didn't care I was just another human sucking in some air I turned and saw a church my feet took me inside Jesus on his cross looked down on me and smiled We began to have a chat it was nice to find a friend I told him I had a broken soul that he might like to mend I left the church the sun was bright the air was fresh and clear my feet they had a spring in them I felt no doubt or fear I helped the workmen fill in the hole I gave the dog a pat I took the shadow by the hand and we began to chat.
