#sobrantepark11500 #idgafcrew The Story of Sobrante Park is the Story of the Death of Oakland In 1946, developers built Oakland's first "planned community." It may have been America's first planned community as well.  It was a "whites only" development for soldiers returning home from the Second World War. By the 1980's, Sobrante Park had become synonymous with drug dealing, shootings, urban decay, and ultimately, death. Now there is another war. And it is happening right here where we live. This is our story. What had originally been orchards and farms, then a housing development, then a literal war zone, has come to represent the death of the American Dream. We are are still considered the most notorious neighborhood in Oakland. And for good reason. Due to our design, there is "only one way in and one way out." In the past, far too many people have left the neighborhood feet first, in a body bag. Some still do. I knew some of them.  Yet we are real people here. Along with my neighbors, I want to tell our stories.  #deepeastoakland
