Red Tea
In Fiji Islands right now the Mataqali meaning a native land owner are taking away most of the leased land. From Indo Fijian. Instead of extending the lease of mostly sugarcane farmers. In our village Vitogo Lautoka the Mataqali is not sparing the land of anyone. This also took place back in 2000. Following the coup the government of Fiji Islands collapsed. I remember I went with my dad to the younger brother of our Mataqali named Mario. I was just a little child and I still remember the names bro. Our Mataqli was named Saqiasi. On the weekend morning Mario served us with a half loaf of bread each with butter and an enormous bowl full of red tea. Yummy. But my dad finished eating my bread for me. Our lease was passed for 30 years. Our neighbours only took the roof off their houses because the houses were made of cement. I totally went to the past. Now present. My older cousin from Australia called me on Friday. The Mataqali of Vitogo our village Saqiasi some time ago passed away. His younger brother Mario now runs the show. My cousin told me the Mataqali meaning Mario took the land of a Muslim man. Where the Muslim man was doing sugarcane farming. Very close friend of my dad. Mario said he will build an Airbnb in that land. Fiji is getting worse by day. Every Indo Fijian is trying to escape Fiji Islands every day. There is only foundation of the Airbnb. Itβs pretty much cruelty. But I do appreciate the bread butter and the enormous bowl full of red tea.
