knock knock” sound effect and sync it to the video you already have. Movie genaret phote senceWhile hiking with a group of tourists, we became thirsty. In the distance, we spot a house. We walk over, hoping to ask for some water. I knock. No answer. I knock again. Still nothing. I keep knocking... Silence. I glance through one of the windows. For a brief moment... I think I notice something. I slowly turn and look at one of the women in the group. She is already looking at me. Then... She smiles. I don't think much of it. We leave the house behind and continue our hike. We still have about 5 km before reaching our destination. I'm the only tour guide, leading nine tourists through the trail. After another 3 km, we reach a breathtaking viewpoint. One of the women asks me to take pictures of her with her smartphone. "No problem," I say. I take a few photos. Then another. And another. As I'm lining up the next shot... A message notification suddenly appears on the screen. Noluthando Mgomezulu: You have 2 weeks left. Maybe tell your man taking your pictures to help you. I freeze for a split second. Then I pretend I never saw it. I hand her phone back with a smile. The photos come out amazing. Eventually, we reach our destination. Everyone is exhausted. We freshen up, enjoy supper together, and call it a day. The following morning... Everyone leaves for home. ... Two weeks later... I take a taxi to Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg. The taxi stops on the side of the road, facing west, just a short distance from the building. As soon as I step out... BANG! Someone slams straight into me. I don't even see him coming. A man is pushing a trolley at full speed. On it is a massive white bag overflowing with empty plastic bottles for recycling. He races east down the road like he's chasing time itself. The impact sends me crashing onto the ground. Before I can even understand what happened... He's already gone. He never looks back. I quickly get to my feet and brush myself off. Embarrassed. Then I notice something. On the opposite side of the road... Four women are walking west. The same direction I'm heading. Towards the mall entrance. From the way they're dressed, they look like women who work in business. Maybe accountants. 😊 They saw everything. I can feel the embarrassment all over again. So I smile... Raise my hand... And wave. "Hi." They smile and wave back. The road separates us as we continue walking in the same direction. Step by step... We all arrive at the mall entrance at exactly the same time. The road between us has ended. Now... We're walking side by side. One of the women looks at me... Then bursts into laughter. "I still can't believe how you fell," she says, playfully tapping my shoulder. The others laugh too. I shake my head and laugh with them. We take another step toward the entrance. Then... SHIP! A deafening crack tears through the air. The woman beside me suddenly falls silent. Her smile disappears. For a split second... She's still standing. Then... She collapses right in front of me. Blood begins spreading across the pavement. People scream. Some run. Others freeze. I don't move. I can't. As I stare at her body... I realize something... My senses suddenly return. I immediately drop to the ground. I begin crawling, desperately searching for cover. In case another shot comes. The mall security has already responded. The alarm is blaring. While hiding behind one of the massive concrete pillars supporting the mall, I watch security guards and police officers flood the area. Weapons drawn. Pointing in every direction. Unsure where the shooter is. Or where the next shot will come from. The gunfire stops. Only one shot. One single shot... The one that tore through that woman. Crying. Shaking. Her friends are hiding behind the same concrete pillar with me. The police eventually evacuate everyone from the mall. They place us near one of their vehicles. I assume it's for questioning. The women can't stop begging to see their friend. A cellphone suddenly rings. One of the women beside me struggles to take it out. She's shaking too much. A doctor kneels beside her, trying to calm her down. "Let me help you with that," I say, gently taking the phone from her hand. I answer it. "Hello." A woman's voice immediately speaks. "Did you help her?" I frown. "Uhm... the owner of this phone isn't available right now. There has been an incident. She'll call you back as soon as possible." There is a brief silence. Then... "I'm talking to you." "What?" I stare at the phone. "Me?... Me?" "Yes. You." "What?... Why would you call... Help her with..." Before I can finish— "Sir! Put that phone down! Put that phone down... NOW!" A police officer yells, pointing his gun directly at me. Panicking, I immediately end the call. I place the phone on the ground. Then... SHIP! Another deafening shot echoes across the area. The woman beside me suddenly goes silent. For a split second... She's still standing. Then... She collapses right in front of me. Blood spreads across the pavement. Everything becomes strangely quiet. It feels as though every bit of energy is leaving my body. I feel exhausted. Defeated. The only thing I can still see... Is police officers running... Pointing their guns in every direction. I turn to look at the last remaining woman. I can tell she's screaming. Screaming as loud as she can. But... I realize... I've met these women before. They look familiar. Though this was just a random street meet-up. Or was it? ................................. End of Episode 2, Season 1 of Hlubi Kabelo Novel - Noluthando Mgomezulu.
