Poppa Legba pulling up on the D Express
Artist Bio: Papa Legba's D Train Express Papa Legba's D Train Express isn't just a song—it's a spectral dispatch from the underworld tracks of New York City, channeled through a voice that's equal parts loa whisper and tunnel echo. Emerging from the shadows of the IND/BMT lines, this project fuses Haitian Vodou mythology with the haunted pulse of the MTA's oldest surviving cars: the R32 "Brightliners," those stainless-steel relics from 1964-65 that refuse to retire quietly. At the helm is Papa Legba, the eternal gatekeeper of crossroads, reimagined here as the motor man of a ghost R32 D train express. No ordinary conductor—this loa rises from ocean reefs and saltwater graves, barnacles clinging to the steel, horn blasting through forgotten corridors of stolen land. Beside him rides the Grim Reaper as conductor, punching tickets for ancestral passengers who board and disembark between the living and the dead. Loyal hound Barkin' growls warnings at every stop. The track's core fury stems from real history: the destruction of Seneca Village (1825–1857), Manhattan's thriving free Black community—homes, churches, schools, cemetery—razed by eminent domain to birth Central Park. Papa Legba slows the train there, rage building as he witnesses the decay layered above: urban blight from 205th Street to Coney Island, broken blocks, lost fights. Frustration boils in the smoke of his pipe; the city pretends it's just another Holland Tunnel run, but transit authority knows nothing—this train's off the map, popping up in venues, streets, dreams. Musically, "D Train Express" rides a relentless, rhythmic engine: trap-blues hybrid with clattering rail percussion, heavy 808s mimicking train rumble, bluesy guitar bends echoing tunnel howls, and call-and-response hooks that demand respect. Five verses build like stations, each ending in a pounding hook: "Papa Legba on the D train express! / R32 risen, no peace, no rest!" The bridge drops low and heavy, invoking justice like thunder, before the outro fades with distant horn wails and ancestral whispers. This isn't folklore remix—it's invocation. In a city built on erased histories, Papa Legba drives eternal, reminding riders: honor the past or get swallowed in shade. Respect the ride. Show some respect. One listen, and you're on board—living or dead. (Debut single dropping soon in the underground circuit. No label. No schedule. Just the tracks calling.)
